Who we are...

In 2009, Mrs. H. Ndilowe, who was at that time, Malawi’s Ambassador to the United States hosted a meeting of Malawian women  in the Washington DC metropolitan area and challenged the group to explore opportunities to collectively contribute towards development in Malawi. Reflecting on their experiences, expertise, and desire to give back to Malawi, these women pledged to  work together  and launch a non-profit organization for charitable, educational and community service purposes by supporting education of the youth, especially girls, at all levels from primary, secondary to tertiary levels; providing and delivering medical supplies and equipment to public hospitals and clinics operating in rural areas; and responding to emergency food needs of poor communities while empowering them to attain food self-sufficiency where possible.  They formed a working group to work out the modalities for launching what would later become the Malawi Washington Foundation. During this phase, the women continued to convene, plan and raise money under the auspices of Malawi Washington Women’s Association. They took a proactive role in meeting some of the preliminary objectives of the Foundation, primarily supporting youth education and vocational training, specifically for girls.

In December 2012, the Malawi Washington Foundation was registered as a District of Columbia not for profit organization. It was officially launched in September 2013. Efforts are now underway to establish the Malawi Washington Foundation as a tax-exempt organization under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code .  At present, the Foundation’s initiatives and objectives are supported solely through charitable donations and annual membership dues. Since 2012, MWF’s membership has shown steady and continued growth.

As of December 2016, the Malawi Washington Foundation has supported 11 young, deserving scholars through the provision of tuition/school fees, fees for room and board, school supplies transportation, food, and toiletries. Although it initially focused on vulnerable female scholars, the Foundation has broadened its scope to support vulnerable male students as well. The Foundation plans to expand fundraising efforts to meet its other objectives such as the provision of medical supplies in rural areas and sustainable resources for elderly-headed households caring for  dependents orphaned by HIV/AIDS. The Malawi Washington Foundation also collaborates with other organizations that seek to improve the lives of vulnerable populations in Malawi. 

 

Our Objectives & Goals

To support youth education, especially for girls, at all levels from primary to tertiary, as well vocational training

To award supplies that will enhance children's school attendance and educational attainment (such as backpacks, food, sanitary napkins)

To provide and deliver medical supplies and equipment to public hospitals and clinics, especially those in rural areas.

To respond to emergency needs of poor communities and empower them to attain food self-sufficiency and other essential needs

To alleviate the impact of HIV-AIDS, especially among orphans, child-headed and elderly-headed households.

To liaise with organizations that support Malawi, whose mission and  objectives are aligned with the Malawi Washington Foundation’s mission and objectives

Our Scope of Work

Scholarship Fund for Girls Education

The MWF is a US-based registered non-profit organization that works with collaborators who understand the structural, cultural and infrastructural settings necessary to ensure the assistance reaches the needy. In 2015, MWF entered into a 4-year, renewable partnership with the Forum for Africa Women Educationalists in Malawi (FAWEMA) as its implementing partner in Malawi. FAWEMA  is a Malawi-based registered non-profit organization that focuses on enhancing access, retention and progression from primary to tertiary education of girls and women. FAWEMA has operated in Malawi for more than 20 years. 

Shipping of Medical Supplies

The Foundation also collaborates with other non-governmental organizations to provide medical supplies to hospitals that cater to the uninsured such as the Kamuzu Central Hospital Intensive Care Unit

Food Relief Efforts

In 2015, the MWF, together with the Malawi Washington Association and Southern Africa Community USA (SACU) collaborated in a campaign called the Washington Area Malawi Flood Relief Effort (WAMFRE) to raise funds for flood victims in Malawi  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mhJYkixOWCk
